If I saw it, it probably wasn't far from where I was looking.

چکیده
People are most likely to see something if their gaze is directed at it. Thus if they saw something they may be biased towards believing that they had been looking at it. In order to examine whether this is so we asked participants where a target that jumped to a new position every 250 ms had been at a moment indicated by a flash or a tone. The jumping introduced uncertainty about where the target was at the indicated moment, giving room for biases to be expressed. Participants showed a clear preference to select positions that were nearer to where they were looking.

Years ago when it all began, when I was 16, I was lying in the grass and I heard a crying child. I looked for it. I couldn't find the child. When I went home I heard the child again. And if there is, how is it related to the s...

Far from being a detour into the world of horror films, this debate asks a serious question: Could an individual act and speak just like other individuals without having any internal conscious experience? Belief in the possibility of these so-called philosophical zombies serves as a litmus test for wheth...

A s an intern, I took care of the fi rst patients with HIV/AIDS at San Francisco General Hospital, and so I grew up with AIDS in the early days of my medical career. We struggled through the confusion about what was making people so sick, and each new day brought a new discovery about the disease and its consequences. I went through that evolutionary process along with everybody else, and it sh...

During one of the several unsuccessful admission interviews I had before finally being admitted to a graduate program, an interviewer asked me what kind of research I would like to do as a psychologist. "I plan to validate the Rorschach" was my reply. "And what will you do if you find the Rorschach isn't valid?" was the interviewer's next question. I don't recall my answer but it was obviously ...
